Film industry Education:

Piedmont Community College Film & Video Production

What do you think your first job in the film industry will be? Director? Executive Producer? Get real. Unless you find some real world training and experience you’ll spend the next five years delivering coffee, fetching dry cleaning and picking up the assistant director’s pet iguana from the veterinarian …if you’re lucky. Or you can get the skills that are in demand in today’s motion picture industry. Editors, Boom Operators, Electricians, Grips…there are hundreds of jobs for these highly trained professionals behind the scenes of every motion picture, television show or commercial. That’s where the Film & Video Production Technology program at Piedmont Community College comes in. Our students learn these skills through hands on training working on a set, not reading in a classroom. For two years you’ll learn a variety of technical skills. Camera, editing, sound, lighting, production, art department, grip, electrics, make-up, wardrobe and location management. You’ll work side-by-side with our instructors, each of whom works in the industry locally. And you’ll use the latest technology, gaining experience on the same equipment you’ll use on the job. Click on the buttons above to find out more about our students, staff & faculty, previous productions, and future plans. PCC Film & Video is all about building the next generation of film technicians in North Carolina. Join us and be one of them.

1. What kind of career will a film major prepare me for? Our students have gone on to careers in film and television and in education (see Alumni page). The analytical and communication skills our program develops enables our graduates to work successfully in creative, educational, and business environments. Back to Top. 2. Will I be able to do an internship for credit? Yes. Contact organizations directly to set up unpaid internships. The Director of Film Studies can start you off with a list of organizations our students have worked with in the past, but you are not limited to these groups. Internships are generally treated as 3 hour independent study courses and require 150 hours (10 hours per week during a regular semester). They should enable the student to learn or develop a specific skill in film programming, exhibition, production, research, or promotion. Contact Dr. Pramaggiore for more information. Back to Top. 3. What minimum GPA is required to become a film major? Students must have a 2.00 or better GPA to declare the Arts Applications-Film major. Back to Top. 4. How do I become a film major?
